Age Discrimination Articles

Two articles about the success of the baby boomers — in job search and entrepreneurship.

Age Discrimination Stats

Shows unemployment rate by age decade for the year 2011. Ages 50 and above all at 6.8% or below. National rate overall was 8.9%.

Sample Two-Page Admin Resume

Demonstrates various aspects of professional resume writing. Pay special attention to the Profile (especially Core Competencies) and the bulleted achievements, which give resumes distinction and uniqueness. Two-page resumes are almost always used for positions $125,000 and above and are sometimes used for positions as low as $75,000.

Sample One-Page Admin Resume

Same person as above, put into a one-page format. Note the condensing of all aspects of the two-page resume to tell the same story in fewer words.

Three-Point Cover Letter Template

This is a shell you can use in writing your own letter.

Three-Point Cover Letter Sample

This is an actual letter, to show how the three points can be created.

Career Achievements Exercise

Analysis of how to create job achievements to enhance the resume.

Madigan Accomplishments Handout

John Madigan’s file on accomplishments. Good to read both this and the document above. A little overlap, but lots of great information with the two combined.

Indeed Exercise

An exercise designed to identify possible target jobs. Excellent or revising a resume with the idea of adding Core Competencies and Keyword Optimization.

Wordle Exercise

An exercise to customize a resume or cover letter using the Wordle.net website.

Video

The Lesson of the Mission Impossible Squirrel

In less than one minute of video, a squirrel teaches us almost everything we need to know about attitude, problem-solving and persistence in job search.  Key lessons - he keeps his "eye on the prize" - completely focused on eating those nuts - he uses his imagination to overcome every obstacle - and he doesn't take personally the fact that there are challenges between him and his goal.  Be Like the Squirrel!!!
